Read our journey as we explore the rich history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes of this hidden gem during our Pakistan tour.

Expedition towards Shigar Valley

Our adventurous journey began as we started moving toward our destination from Skardu, the next day after climbing the Marsur Rock. Shigar is 51.4 km away, which is almost a 1 hour 30 minutes drive via Shigar road. The road journey throughout offered incredible landscapes that kept us refreshed.

The best spot along the way is the Sarfranga Cold Desert, 25 km away from Skardu. We couldn’t resist and made a stop at the wondrous cold desert and after exploring it, we quickly got back to our track to Shigar Valley.

The desert then took us to a bridge over the Shigar River. Once after traversing it, we reached the mesmerizing Shigar Valley.

As we journeyed through the valley, we could feel the disconnection from the world and enter into heaven. Most villages and places in Shigar are remote and thus, they are inaccessible. While the dramatic part of the region, too, lives a simple and folksy life. People of the area were indeed very welcoming, and we felt at home.

The lush orchards around were a feast for the eyes as the entire valley is rich in minerals and famous for growing fruits like apples, walnuts, grapes, peaches, pears, and apricots. We took a drive around while enjoying the peaceful views of the valley.

Top Tourist Attractions in Shigar Valley:

When visiting Shigar Valley, these are the top tourist sights to witness.

Shigar Fort

One of our first stops was the Shigar Fort, a 450-year-old monument that stands as a testament to the architectural legacy of the Baltistan region. This lavish fort is built on a rocky boulder and is known as ‘Fong-Khar’, which translates to ‘Palace on the Rock’ in the Balti language. Raja Hassan Khan the 20th ruler of the Amacha Dynasty built this fort.

It once was a power center for the Shiagr ruler but has now turned into a heritage hotel leased by Serena Hotel. It was then beautifully restored and houses a museum showcasing its rich history. On our journey, we went and explored all the antiques that reflect history. A tour of the fort unveiled its 40 rooms, consisting of cooking areas, kitchens, servants’ quarters, and a family mosque. After a complete journey, we savored traditional cuisine in the pleasing Serena Hotel.

Amburik Mosque

The next stop was Amburik Mosque. Constructed over 750 years ago, the Amburik Mosque is a stunning example of wooden architecture and excellent craftsmanship. It was built by Sayed Ali Hamdani and is one of the oldest mosques in Baltistan.

The 14th-century mosque is a significant landmark as the first Islamic monument in Shigar and was awarded as a heritage site in 2006 by UNESCO. Thus, it is a popular site to visit in Shigar.

Khanqah-e-Mualla

Khanqah-e-Mualla is yet another historically and religiously significant place in Shigar Valley. The 400-year-old mosque is the epitome of serenity and peace. It is surrounded by spectacular gardens and flowing streams, and the spiritual peace here totally awed us.

Orchards of Shigar: Hashupi Garden

The enriched Shigar Valley has a wealth of fruits, and the Hashupi Garden is a significant example of it. Surrounded by lush green orchards bearing vibrant and sweet fruits, this famous bagh is a little heaven in Shigar. It is located near Shigar Mal in Shigar City.

The enchanting place had blossoming plants and fruits like cherries, apricots, apples, and grapes. The garden was beautifully maintained and was no less than a feast for the eyes

Jarba Zhou Lake (The Blind Lake)

Jarba Zhou is derived from two Balti words which translate to ‘Blind Lake.’ It is called Blind Lake because there is no apparent water supply or discharge, and yet this lake still shines with its turquoise blue water. The magnificent freshwater lake had trout as well, and we enjoyed a delightful time there.

Shigar Valley has many trekking and hiking opportunities for those looking for adventure. You can trek towards Baltoro Glaciers which is a 5-day trek after traveling from Skardu to Askole village. Once after completing it, the peak offers an incredible view of the entire glacial valley.

There’s another trek toward K2 Base Camp, and it takes around seven days. It has the most difficult route but offers the most amazing vistas of the magnificent K2.

Our journey to the Shigar Valley was truly a blissful experience. The culturally and historically rich valley had numerous scenic landscapes and totally enriched our journey.

The beauty of this valley is spellbinding, and it is recommended to everyone to visit it at least once!
