Pakistan is home to many gigantic mountains, with the world’s second-highest peak, K2 – the world’s second highest mountain. Among the many majestic views of northern Pakistan, Skyang Kangri adds value to the beauty of the range.
Skyang Kangri, or Staircase Peak, is located in the Baltoro Muztagh range, a sub-range of the Karakoram range, lying at the Pakistan—China border, 7 km northeast of the K2. Skyang Kangri stands at an elevation of 7,545 meters (24,754 ft) with its grand structure.
The name suggests Staircase Peak because the East Ridge of the mountain resembles a tremendous staircase with five steps. To reach the pinnacle of the peak, one must cover this arduous yet challenging climb.

Nearby Prominent Peaks:
Skyang Kangri is the 43rd highest peak on Earth and is located in the Baltoro Muztagh. Being the extension of the Karakoram range, it is neighboring the grand peaks of the Karakoram massif. The nearest higher neighbor is the K2, and the region’s notable grand peaks are Broad Peak, Gasherbrum, and Masherbrum.
Historical Attempts and Expeditions:
Skyang Kangri was first explored by a group of mountaineers comprising Luigi Amadeo di Savoia and the Duke of the Abruzzi in 1909. The Duke was an Italian famous for his arctic exploration and mountaineering expeditions, especially to K2 and others.
They climbed the Skyang Kangri from the East side and attempted a failed attempt again in 1975. The expedition was completed with the death of a climber, and one had been evacuated with the assistance of a helicopter.
The first successful ascent was made in 1976 by a Japanese group. They climbed the peak from the East ridge, comprising five staircase structures, without any major casualty.
In 1980, the Skyang Kangri West face was climbed by American climbers Jeff Lowe and Michael Kennedy, but they attempted to make their way to a height of 7,070 meters.
Trek towards Skyang Kangri
Pushing the summit of Skyang Kangri (7,545m) has been a doable objective since being climbed by the Japanese in the 1980’s. Its east ridge side is the most convenient and possible route to embark on the expedition trek to Skyang. Our guide has also informed us to take this route because of its convenience.
As we drove from Islamabad to reach Concordia, the converging point of all towering peaks of the Karakoram range. Before going forward, we equipped ourselves and prepared meticulously before the ascent. Fortunately, the decision to hire a guide proves favorable, as it is necessary if you are unaware of the surroundings and rocky terrain of the mountain.
During our trek, our guide emphasized the significance of the Skyang Kangri mountain among mountaineers. He explained that climbers who aspire to tackle formidable peaks like K2 and other eight-thousanders often use Skyang Kangri for acclimatization and preparation. It helps them adapt to the challenges and obstacles they’ll encounter during their high-altitude endeavors.
The trail of the Skyang is convenient from East Ridge. However, all the faces of the mountain have their own formidable challenges. The terrain is icy and rocky, which makes it a tough climb for mountaineers.
Our exposure to conquer the mountain reveals that climbers need determination and endurance to bear the calamities of weather with steadfastness. It is a steep climb that needs careful navigation and acclimatization to the frigid weather of the glacial peaks.
However, our following journey will be at the highest peak of the region, so we only made our way to the base camp of Skyang Kangri. As imagined in my scenarios, I can feel that the summit push would unfold a panoramic view if we trek ahead. Witnessing the towering peaks blanketed in ice.
Tips for Aspiring Climbers of Skyang Kangri:
Before embarking on the cold Karakoram region, it’s essential to backpack appropriately for the challenging terrain and varying weather conditions. My expedition to the mountains gave me experience to recommend others following clothing and gear.
Hiking Boots: Bring sturdy and waterproof boots with good ankle support for navigating rugged trails.
Weather-Resistant Clothing: Baltoro Muztagh is a glacial region, so pack yourself in layers so that with the fluctuating temperatures, your body temperature will remain maintained. Include a waterproof and windproof jacket.
Comfortable Backpack: A durable and comfortable backpack to carry essentials during trekking. So, if you are embarking on an alpine-style mountaineering trip, you will easily bear your own baggage.
Gloves: Protect your hands with Insulated gloves for warmth and protection. In the cold temperatures of the Karakoram range, there is a risk of frostbite. Also, gloves give you a firm grip while trekking and during summits.
Water Bottle and Purification: Freezing temperature makes you dehydrated, but your body needs to stay hydrated. Accompany a reusable water bottle and a reliable water purification system with you to experience a smooth adventure.
First Aid Kit: Keep a handy bag, including basic medical supplies, in case of any minor injuries and illnesses during the journey.
Camera: The most important thing is the camera which captures your journey from commencement to closure. Seize every precious moment by locking it into your camera lens.
Ensure that all gear is of high quality and well-suited for the specific conditions you may encounter during your journey to the Karakoram peaks. Adjust the list based on the season, duration, and specific peaks you plan to visit.
