Trekking in the extreme weather of Northern areas can prove to be the biggest challenge while on a trek. At Rakaposhi, there is a heavy fall of snow. The temperature can range from around 5 degrees centigrade during the day and can go below –2 degrees centigrade. Trekking through the trails of Rakaposhi in winter can be a bit challenging. Mostly due to the extreme temperature fluctuations and potential road closures. Summers are indeed a more convenient time to visit. Though the temperature is still harsh, but bearable. And with suitable clothes, gear and preparation a person can even survive in the extremely cold weather.
Here are a few tips that you need to know to cope with the weather during your trek to Rakaposhi base camp. By following them, you will surely have a better journey and will be able to travel more easily.
Choose The Proper Essentials For The Trek:
Knowing and having the right items to carry for the trip is integral for having a safe trip and coping in the freezing weather. You cannot pack excessive items as you will be the one carrying your backpack. And having a heavy backpack will only add to your list of problems.
The most frequently asked question is what clothes and gear do we need to pack for the trek?
To adapt to the continuously changing weather, you need to pack warm layers, shirts that are not cotton based, trekking pants, a waterproof and windproof jacket. Keep gloves, at least 2 pairs of socks, toiletries, a flashlight, sunscreen, and a raincoat. As you will need plenty of water, make sure to have at least two water bottles. Keep emergency medicine, energy bars and compact snacks in the bag too.
Other than that, you need to have camping essentials too. This includes hiking sticks, a durable tent that can be used in various weathers, an insulating tent with a built-in pad, a first aid kit, and some other essential tools. Having these items will help you commence a safe trip without any hardships.
Tips For Staying Hydrated During The Trek:
Cold weather can be deceptively dehydrating as cold air is much dryer. And it cannot hang on to moisture like warm air. The colder the temperature is, the more quickly the water evaporates. This makes the simple act of breathing a contributing factor to fluid loss during the colder months. To ensure a healthy trip, always stay hydrated by keeping a leak proof thermos flask. Keep travel sized moisturizer to moisturize your skin constantly and an inhaler for the extreme weather.
How To Be Prepared For The Trek?
Trekking is a great outdoor activity that can take you on adventurous expeditions in mountainous areas. The entire journey is full of thrill, but it can go wrong very quickly if you go into it completely unprepared. Hence preparing for a multi-day trek is necessary. You cannot blindly get into trekking as it is a sport that requires practice and time. Indulging in strenuous exercise is necessary as you need excellent physical and mental health. It is integral to be flexible and comfortable while trekking somewhere. Partaking in small hikes, daily running, and at least 20-minute workouts will help you build your strength.
Information You Need To Acquire Beforehand While Going On A Trekking Expedition:
Whether it is your first trek or your 68th you cannot plan a trek without knowing basic information about that trek or just trekking in general. Some of the things you need to know are;
Pick your route wisely: You need to put some thought into the trek you choose as there are many ranges of difficulty that you can pick from depending on the trail and the weather.
Always check the weather before leaving: Before continuing your trekking journey, always check the weather forecast prior to heading out. A weather check will give you information on how to dress accordingly and what to pack.
Safety precautions: A close friend or a family member should always know your itinerary while you are traveling as the unpredictable weather is capable of anything. During treks in places with glaciers be aware of the thin ice too.
Having A Healthy Immune System Is Essential:
Having a strong immune system is crucial for a successful trekking journey. Before starting on your adventure, a medical checkup is necessary to help you identify any concerns that may affect your ability to handle the trekking trip. People with respiratory or cardiovascular diseases are advised not to take part in these activities as it may worsen their condition. Extreme weather, hot or cold both, can impact your health by putting stress on your immune system. So, it is recommended to get your doctor’s approval before the trek so you can have a healthy and safe journey.
