Seeking thrill on an extraordinary odyssey to Gul Lasht Zom, where every step tells a story written by the breathtaking wind-swept peaks.
Mountaineering is undoubtedly an expensive and laboursome sport but for people like me, it’s a lifestyle. To stay fit for a hike, I must prioritize my physical health through a balanced diet and regular exercise. It’s an activity that requires skill and dedication which is only possible if you’re passionate about it.
I have never been a majorly outgoing person but one activity that always helped me connect with my friends and family is Mountaineering. The experience itself cannot be described in words. What entices me is the struggle to reach the peak and the thrill that empowers you at the top. I remember feeling like I was at the top of the world on my very first hike with my childhood group of friends. This is exactly how I felt, when I found myself stepping onto the summit of Gul Lasht Zom.
About Gul Lasht Zom:
Gul Lasht Zom Peak is a part of the Hindu Raj range in Lotkoh, Chitral in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Hindu Raj mountain range is nestled between the Hindu Kush and Karakoram mountain ranges in northern Pakistan, which increases its attraction. Gul Lasht Zom was first climbed by Takayasu Sembo, leading a team from Japan, in 1979.
Today, it is a famously sought-after spot for climbers. It is raised to 6,657m (21,841 ft) and is one of the easier peaks to climb in the area. This was one of the reasons why we chose it to be our destination.
Gul Lasht Zom Peak serves as an ideal spot for someone who is just getting into Mountaineering and hiking. It is located in a remote area and is close to the wildlife of the northern areas thus providing a complete experience.
Climbing Gul Lasht Zom:
My friend chose the most popular climbing route for our hike as it seemed the easiest. We climbed through the southeast ridge which started from the Chiantar glacier. It wasn’t too long until we realized that it was a very challenging route that required professional techniques and vigilance. We were grateful to our guide for getting us through the terrain. I would recommend not to go on such an expedition as a beginner without professional help. Our guide helped us identify and navigate through all the loose rocks and difficult footings.
The initial journey was easy and gradual which allowed us to get a good grip on climbing. We were lucky because the weather at the time was ideal for the sport. It is better to take weather conditions into account before such expeditions as harsh weather would only add to your problems. The real struggle started when we neared the top as the ascent was much steeper. A group of newbies couldn’t climb further without using professional equipment. On the command of our guide, we took out our ropes and fixed them to a high point to lift ourselves up. It’s not for people with a fear of heights.
Throughout our trip, our guide kept pointing out various wild mountain flowers and informing us about the distinct flora of the area. He told us about the wildlife as well but we weren’t lucky enough to encounter any during our journey.
Despite the exhaustion and struggles, when we finally did reach the top everything was forgotten. The view from the summit was unlike anything I had ever seen before. We could see the distant mountain peaks of the neighboring ranges and the valleys between them through the hovering clouds in front of us. Enchanted by the silent calmness and serenity, we chose to extend our stay at the peak. This trip was certainly one of those that made me fall in love with Mountaineering.
Trekking to Gul Lasht Zom:
The Gul Lasht Zom Peak is also a famous trekking destination for many locals as well as foreigners. I, myself, haven’t had the opportunity to go trekking in the beautiful remote areas of the Hindu Kush mountain range but it is definitely on my bucket list. The trek originates from Mastuj village in upper Chitral, likened to the beauty of the Hunza Valley in Gilgit Baltistan. The journey to the base camp takes approximately 5 days, traversing through remote villages, meadows, forests, and other picturesque locations. Along the way, you’ll encounter the rich tapestry of the region’s landscapes and cultures. The base camp sits at 3,900m (12,800 ft), offering the perfect view of the Chiantar Glacier.
Safe and Responsible Climbing:
In light of my experience, I have compiled some essential considerations that you should ponder before embarking on this journey. Firstly, assess the terrain and weather conditions to ensure preparedness. Additionally, plan your route meticulously, taking into account key landmarks and potential challenges. Moreover, invest time in gathering information about the local culture and customs. Lastly, but equally important, make sure your gear is in top condition to guarantee a smooth and enjoyable expedition.
- Take a fitness test to make sure you are eligible for the sport
Start a light workout routine (if you don’t already have one) including cardio, crunches, pushups, etc to condition your muscles for the expected strain.
- Invest in high-quality gear
Helmets, crampons, and harnesses are an utmost necessity, and climbing rough terrain without them can potentially put your life in danger. Some other essentials that you should carry with you are;
- Keep in tune with the weather forecast
This will help you prepare your clothing and food according to your needs on the journey.
- Enlisting with a local professional guide
Furthermore, a well-experienced guide will not only assist you in navigating challenging points on your hike but will also enlighten you about the significance of the area’s local flora and fauna. Moreover, having a knowledgeable local companion ensures added safety.
Taking these steps will prevent unforeseen calamities on your trip and guarantee a safe and memorable experience.
